As a homeowner, you probably don’t think much about cleaning your floors. Every now and again, you’ll whip out the mop or vacuum and give your flooring a once-over to remove dust and dirt, but do you know if that’s actually effective? Floor Coverings International looks at some of the most common misconceptions people have with regards to cleaning their floors.
Putting it off. Nothing is worse for your floors than putting off cleaning up a spill. Hardwood floors can stain just as easily as carpeting. When you or the kids accidentally spill anything, from juice to fruit spreads, clean it up immediately. This will help prevent stains from settling in and eliminate the chance of any bugs swarming to the scene. Spend the minute cleaning up messes as they happen to prevent the need to spend 20-30 minutes attacking a stain later.
Starting before the room is ready. When it comes to cleaning your floors quickly and efficiently, remove anything from the surface of the floors first. This ensures that you’re covering the entire area and removing dirt and dust from areas that would otherwise be ignored (think behind couches and underneath tables). Once the room is clear, start cleaning from the top and work your way down. In other words, dust ceiling fans, window sills, and tabletops prior to cleaning your floors. Flooring should always come last to ensure you get the best clean!
Using the wrong product. The cleaning solution you use will depend entirely on the type of flooring you have in your home. You wouldn’t use a hardwood polish on your carpet – make sure the cleaning product of your choice makes sense for the task at hand. Whether you’re looking to deodorize or fight stains, the right product will get the job done more quickly.
Not cleaning your vacuum. If your home is mostly carpeted, your vacuum has probably taken a beating over the years. To keep it in optimal working condition, change or empty your vacuum canisters as soon as they become full. On a monthly basis, clean any filters your vacuum features to prevent buildup, which can clog the vacuum and prevent proper suction.
Cleaning is a necessary part of owning a home, and no one wants to devote more time to it than they have to. Give your floors an efficient cleaning with these tips and tricks!
